Republican congressional candidate Dale Sweetland issued a statement Monday critical of the Democratic-controlled Congress for taking a summer vacation while schools struggle with higher energy costs. "This is disgraceful," said Sweetland, whose rant against Congress was provoked by a story in Monday's Post-Standard citing 30 to 40 percent increases in energy costs for Central New York school districts. Congressional candidate David Gay conceded Thursday his campaign for the 25th District seat is over because he failed to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The petitions for another candidate in the 25th District, Howie Hawkins of the Green Populist Party, have been challenged by a Democratic Party official in an effort to keep Hawkins off the ballot. After 24 years of polling for local candidates on campus, Syracuse University political professor Jeffrey Stonecash will no longer be able to rent university property for his personal polling operation. Stonecash, best known as the pollster for Republican Rep. Jim Walsh, was asked in June to stop renting out SU phone banks to conduct the polls. Stonecash and the university reached the agreement after an apparent complaint from the campaign of Democratic congressional candidate Dan Maffei, Stonecash said. Read More...
